This 3 days Mgahinga hike takes you through the famous Virunga ranges that stands 3,474 metres high.
Mgahinga harbours various wildlife that includes vegetation consisting afro-montane, bamboo being the main and harbouring different species of animals including the endangered golden monkeys.
The name Mgahinga is derived from the word ‘Gahinga’ that means the piles of stones in the local lingo. It lies between the Mountains Muhavura and Sabinyo. It has a swampy caldera on its peak that is about 180 metres wide. It takes about 6 hours to ascend the mountain.
After your breakfast, embark on your journey to Kisoro about an 8 hours drive. We shall have a stopover at the Uganda Equator for photographs in Masaka town and then continue to Mbarara for lunch. You will then check in your accommodation and prepare for the next day hike.

You will be picked from your accommodation after your breakfast, to the main Ntebeko gate where your adventure starts. Your trek will start at 7:00 am as you ascend the mountain through the magnificent pure bamboo forest. Be keen not to miss the various bird species and animals like the rare golden monkey.
Trek through the ericaceous belt as you reach the top of the mountain where you find the swampy crater that was once a lake due to climatic changes. You will be thrilled by the sight of the other mountain peaks close by plus the swamps and saddles between the mountains that retain water all through the year. The trek takes a full day.
